Tarpan Poojan is a vital Hindu ritual performed to honour and satisfy the departed souls of ancestors. The word “Tarpan” means offering water along with prayers and other sacred substances to the deities and ancestors. This ritual involves offering water mixed with black sesame seeds, barley, and kush grass to invoke the blessings of the ancestors and deities.
It is typically performed on auspicious days, especially during the Pitrupaksha period. The ceremony, conducted by experienced priests, aims to ensure the peace and satisfaction of the ancestors’ souls, remove any ancestral curses (Pitru Dosha), and bring prosperity, harmony, and spiritual well-being to the family.
